Mi’kmaw Elders, youth and community members recognized for contributions, achievements

The contributions and achievements of several Mi’kmaw community members were recognized during the 36th annual Treaty Day celebration on Monday evening, October 24, at Pier 21 in Halifax.

This year, 11 Elders, youth and community members received awards and scholarships.

A shared decision was made to postpone celebrations planned for Oct. 3 following hurricane Fiona until there was an opportunity to gather safely.

“The Mi’kmaq Grand Council believes in keeping the faith and protecting our nation and ensuring that our treaties are sacred and will continue to be honoured,” said Grand Chief Norman Sylliboy. “The Mi’kmaq language has been improving, in the highest court and will continue to improve as long as the sun shines, and as long as the moon rises and as long as the river flows for the next seven generations to follow.”

Traditionally, Treaty Day kicks off Mi’kmaq History Month in October. This year’s theme is Mi’kmaw beadwork and the art of beading.

“On Treaty Day and on all days, we celebrate Mi’kmaw culture, history and heritage,” said Arthur J. LeBlanc, Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia. “We live in an age of unprecedented change, and through it all, I remain inspired by the significant and long-lasting contributions that Mi’kmaq people of all ages make to communities across the province. It is an honour to gather with a number of these individuals tonight and celebrate their many accomplishments.”

Award and scholarships recipients were applauded for their hard work.

“The treaty relationship is important to all Nova Scotians,” said Karla MacFarlane, Minister of L’nu Affairs. “I’m pleased that we have this opportunity to gather, celebrate and recognize the Elders, youth and community members receiving awards this year.”
