Day of Mourning
April 28, 2020
Statement from Minister Labi Kousoulis, Department of Labour and Advanced Education
Every year on April 28 we honour those who have died because of a workplace injury or illness. The National Day of Mourning is a much-needed moment to remember and recognize the lives lost.
Nova Scotians lost twenty-two people because of workplace injury and illness in 2019.
Each individual tragedy is felt deeply by families, communities and our province.
Any workplace can result in a fatality, including the traditional fishing industry. Now more than ever, we are mindful of the risks our emergency responders face daily — and of the challenges our frontline workers face as they keep us safe during the pandemic.
We will continue working together with our partners to make a difference. There is more awareness than ever before of how safety needs to be applied in the workplace. There will always be more to do to keep safety front of mind.
