Statement from Minister Labi Kousoulis, Department of Labour and Advanced Education

Nova Scotia flags and wreaths marked the Day of Mourning in prior years.

very year on April 28 we honour those who have died because of a workplace injury or illness. The National Day of Mourning is a much-needed moment to remember and recognize the lives lost.

Nova Scotians lost twenty-two people because of workplace injury and illness in 2019.

Each individual tragedy is felt deeply by families, communities and our province.

Any workplace can result in a fatality, including the traditional fishing industry. Now more than ever, we are mindful of the risks our emergency responders face daily — and of the challenges our frontline workers face as they keep us safe during the pandemic.

We will continue working together with our partners to make a difference. There is more awareness than ever before of how safety needs to be applied in the workplace. There will always be more to do to keep safety front of mind.
